However, a fear of many Australians is regular, routine dental check-up.

If you find yourself cringing at the thought of a routine check-up, there are a few tricks you can use to help overcome this fear and prevent any future dental problems


  1. Ask for a morning appointment to see your dentist.  

If you find that the anticipation of an upcoming dental check-up is causing you stress, try to make an appointment for first thing in the morning. This will limit the time spent waiting anxiously for an appointment throughout the day.


  1.  Talk to your dentist.

Your friendly dentist may not be aware that you are feeling anxious but if you mention your concerns they will be able to help you. Sometimes all it will take is a detailed explanation of the procedure to put you at ease. Remember, Dentists are no strangers to anxious patients and there is no need to feel embarrassed.


  1. Agree on a Signal.

Prior to starting any treatment, it is a good idea to agree on a nonverbal signal with your dentist to use if you begin to feel uncomfortable. This signal will let your dentist know to give you a few minutes to recover during your treatment.


  1. Talk About Your Pain Management Options

A fear of dentists may simply mean a fear of feeling pain during your visit. Chat with your dentist about these fears and ask if they can provide some pain management options. By working with your dentist to avoid any pain, you will feel more at ease during your appointment.

Don’t let dental anxiety hold you back from receiving proper care. Remember; preventative care will help prevent any major dental problems, which can be the primary cause of a lot of anxiety.
